Bigger Mackerel Are Here

0905kevinhmackerelQuality sized mackerel have shown up off of our Pinellas County Beaches in the last few weeks and, for any angler who gets out there before the sun gets too high, action can be fast.  When pursuing these speedy predators, a typical Tampa Fishing Charter starts with heavy chumming of whitebait. Once the macks have shown up, other species will enter into the mix as well.  On almost every trip, a large barracuda has made a bloody appearance, hammering an already hooked mackerel.  A wounded mackerel can serve as great barracuda bait if quickly retrieved and redeployed on larger tackle. In another few weeks, mangrove snapper should move in as well, providing great light tackle sport and good eating.  With strong tides in the next few days, redfish should re-appear along mangrove shorelines.  A few snook still remain on our beaches and, although not as abundant as in the spring and early summer months, they will bite on the moving tides. Our great fall fishing should be in full swing within the next 30 days.
